Testing the waters

The student will measure the water of a local water way.  They will compare these findings against the water qulaity data from a local creek.
The student will test the runoff for a turbidity measurement and compare it against the standard for heatlhy water.

The student will recommend at least one action to improve water quality.

They student will assume the role of the land owner or animal and present a persuasive paragraph detailing why the action cannot/should be performed.

Materials
Turbidity data conversion chart http://www.girlscoutsnorcal.org/documents/DYW-A2Sup-T urbidity.pdf
Positive Actions Graphic Organizer for reading - Student Generated - Use day one's organizer as a template!

Procedure
**Keep a water sample in a small clear jar for comparison in the "80% is and A" activity

The student will have completed a graphic organizer from a reading the night before.

(obtain turbidity tubes and pull up water quality data from www.calvertnet.k12.md.us  CHESPAX-SAV-Water Quality---Link above)  Have link on smartboard for students to use as they fisnih their testingt
Show the class the location of where the water was collected (Hunting Creek nearest major stream near middle school) using www.googleearth.com

The student will test the turbidity of the water of a local waterway and compare this data against a healthy water measurement. Use Data Sheet from above, includes instructions
This teast and data sheet will take the better part of one full class.  Be sure to leave time to discuss results
Teacher will need to assign or allow student to choose role and an activity/action that is prposed around stream.

The student will assume the role of the home owner or animal and present a persuasive paragraph detailing why the action cannot/should be performed.
